Poe was the best part of the whole show.

This is actually one of the more realistic and well written reviews I’ve seen on this show. Everyone seems to have a strong opinion on a lot of aspects of this show, and this guy addresses a whole lot of it

    >That age-gating is very unfortunate

Must every-fucking-thing include the kids? Can’t adults have anything for adults, on streaming no less

    Otherwise solid review

There were points that I thought were a little corny but overall I really enjoyed the show.

I think the actor who played the neo nazi did a really good job as three different characters. He killed that abuela role.

    > I could level a few criticisms about the show’s later-season surprises, along with some irrational turns in how characters get along. But beyond their spoilery nature, they’re also just not the kinds of bummers that will tank the full season’s impact, should you get through all ten hour-long episodes.

That’s fair and I largely agree. I think the show was fine. Like I said before on here, on the A-F scale I’d give it a solid “B”. I thought the last two episodes were a bit crammed and frankly kind of odd but so much of the first 8 episodes I liked or liked a lot depending on what we are talking about. Where it excelled as a noir/mystery it did real well but the last couple of episodes felt campy and as I said cramped from a plot perspective. Just my two pennies.

Rei’s feelings for her brother went from endearing to really awkward and incestuous real quick and while I loved watching Lizzie kill a bunch of scummy men, I am still not sure how they got her out of where she was being held captive. I very clearly missed something and need to re-watch that.

    >But the series is still pretty nimble at finding opportunities to expand book moments, or build upon them, in ways that make sense without remaining entirely tied to the book. My favorite not-a-spoiler example is when an entire “B plot” of an episode revolves around Ortega’s family. They’re celebrating Día De Los Muertos while arguing about the spiritual and religious beliefs that all these stack- and skin-swaps conjure up—and one family member forces the conversation into an uncomfortable zone by pulling a surprise, last-minute switcheroo using stacks. Multiple generations of a family look at each other in entirely new ways as a result, and every actor involved gets to dance around the scene with performances full of life and energy.

    >This is what damned good sci-fi accomplishes better than any genre: it lets characters become equal parts other-worldly and familiar. It finds a way to laugh and revel while tackling serious life subjects.

I’m glad the writer brings this scene up, as I think it’s one of the reason Altered Carbon works as great scifi, even if it falls off a bit at the end (I’m not a fan of the book change involving Dichen Lachman, although she is a talented actress and did a great job with what they gave her).

It’s a show worth watching, with some smart jabs and stabs into moral philosophy that I hope end up being its hallmark as it ages.

Altered Carbon would make an awesome video game

  8. toronto_programmer February 12, 2018 / 7:13 pm

This show had me hooked early and lost my attention as it went on.

The last few episodes and that plot arc were pretty blah to me.

  9. R-35 February 12, 2018 / 7:13 pm

I loved the show, but not a big fan of the last couple of episodes. I don’t like the direction they took with the main character’s sister.

  10. Oznog99 February 12, 2018 / 7:13 pm

The world was beautiful… yet the plot and characters were inexplicably “meh”.

  11. PeetSquared41 February 12, 2018 / 7:13 pm

Wife and I just finished the show. Episodes 1-7 were some of the best TV sci fi I’ve seen in a long while. I still liked the last three episodes but there were definitely some big left turns and odd scenes…maybe even some of the character interaction felt off. Still, I enjoyed the he’ll out of Altered Carbon and it still has me thinking about it a few days later. I’ve been recommending it and even thought about checking out the book.

  12. MrZombikilla February 12, 2018 / 7:13 pm

I absolutely loved it. Probably my favorite Sci-fi show I’ve seen in a while, and favorite Netflix original so far. Wish the Expanse had the budget and freedom like this.

I recommended it to my brother and he binged it all in one sitting and it’s one of his favorites now too.

To me the show was just so beautiful to look at and I had a great time watching it. Been thinking about it all week after watching it, now the only problem is that I want season 2 already.

  13. Meystrike February 12, 2018 / 7:13 pm

I’ve been watching this show the past two days. So far I think it is extremely well done.

  14. roenick99 February 12, 2018 / 7:13 pm

I liked it. I knew nothing about this going in and was pleasantly surprised overall. It was beautiful to watch and the acting was good enough that it wasn’t a distraction. I would totally recommend. No clue where another season goes from here though.

  15. harleydavidso4 February 12, 2018 / 7:13 pm

That was a great series………hopefully the 2nd will be just as good, with different actors.

  16. Psykpatient February 12, 2018 / 7:13 pm

Is Joel Kinnaman good in this? Does he have a convincing american accent?

  17. TheSandbagger February 12, 2018 / 7:13 pm

might be a dumb question but i’m scared to read the review before i finish the show lol – any spoilers or am i good to go?

  18. last_starrfighter February 12, 2018 / 7:13 pm

Its a great show, great plot, great world building. A couple of characters aren’t as fleshed out. But overall great first season. I give it a solid A in terms of scifi.

  19. Barkasia February 12, 2018 / 7:13 pm

Amazing world design, amazing music, amazing directing. First half of the show was everything it was hyped to be, second half devolved into a sloppy drama. Some acting (Rei, Ortega, Quell, Lizzie) was suspect at best, tragic at worst, the pacing was off, the dialogue was shocking at times. Should’ve kept it a neo-noir mystery instead of a generic “one man saves the world”.

  20. captaincool31 February 12, 2018 / 7:13 pm

I loved it. Almost like a blade runner universe but a tv show. I loved every part of the show.

  21. BeliefsoverTruth February 12, 2018 / 7:13 pm

What a great show, with awesome characters! Watching it twice!

  22. Tyranid457 February 12, 2018 / 7:13 pm

I still can’t believe that it’s finally here! I’ve been waiting for this book to get adapted for a long time!

  23. GaryNOVA February 12, 2018 / 7:13 pm

This is my favorite sci-fi show since Battlestar Galactica. Love it. I want more.

  24. TriplexFlex February 12, 2018 / 7:13 pm

Finished the whole season and tbf it’s a beast, well worth the time.

  25. Sharpe24J February 12, 2018 / 7:13 pm

The show was great. Please let it return for a Season 2. Oh and I agree with others that Poe was the best character.

  26. twighunter February 12, 2018 / 7:13 pm

Also, I really like that everyone is pretty much in agreement that Poe was the best character. To be honest, I’d really like to learn a lot more about the AI in general.

I watched this whole season in three days.

  27. KitsyBlue February 12, 2018 / 7:13 pm

Can someone explain how an AI hotel as versatile and exquisitely equipped as Poe went unused for YEARS? I mean, the idea that the hotel was left immaculate and unused for so long breaks my immersion. It wasn’t even repurposed!

  28. Frank_Scorpio February 12, 2018 / 7:13 pm

Gotta say I’m really liking this show. Don’t know where all the hate is coming from. It’s not _the_ best show I’ve seen but it’s at least a solid B+.

    Takeshi Kovacs solid mofo ftw!

  29. melocoton_helado February 12, 2018 / 7:13 pm

This was quite possibly the best sci-fi production that I’ve ever seen. I loved it. It had a compelling story, fantastic execution, unique and interesting characters, and the performances were pretty fantastic all around.

Edit: I’m also so glad that Waleed Zuaiter (Samir Abboud) is getting more recognition and bigger roles. I’ve been a fan of his for a while now, and it’s nice to see him get some spotlight.

  30. SQUID_FUCKER February 12, 2018 / 7:13 pm

I’ve noticed a trend where most people who didn’t like the show or were disappointed by it, have read the books and have a lot of expectations and preconceived notions about the direction it should’ve gone in. People who haven’t read the books seem to have enjoyed it much more.

  31. spicedpumpkins February 12, 2018 / 7:13 pm

Meh. I had fun watching it knowing I wasn’t expecting a masterpiece.

It was a fun binge watch.

I won’t go out of my way to rewatch it but I don’t feel it was a bad waste of time.

  32. kasakka1 February 12, 2018 / 7:13 pm

The more the series deviated from the books the worse it got. I felt that being faithful to the book would have made this a great series instead of just solid entertainment. The books are already written in a way that would be easy to adapt to the screen with the right special effects budget so I don’t see why they had to shoehorn in Quell so much.

It’s a great looking show though, I hope they arr able to make the other books into TV as well.

  33. mrbrown1980 February 12, 2018 / 7:13 pm

I’m not very far in. I’m finding it interesting but a bit hard to watch. It seems like exactly the kind of thing I’d like, but it’s not grabbing me yet.

It is my opinion that Travelers is by far the better show, even if it is less action-y.

  34. metz123 February 12, 2018 / 7:13 pm

I’ve read all the books and yet I’m alternating between boredom and confusion with the changes they made to the original story.

Way too much lengthy expository dialog. Film is a visual medium. Tell the story visually or don’t bother telling it.

  35. OccupyGravelpit February 12, 2018 / 7:13 pm

I’m about four episodes in and I’m just finding it to be incredibly unhip, which is a big problem for a cyberpunk story.

The Hello Kitty bag, the ‘badass to adolescents’ protagonist, the unsexy tit shots: you just can’t do these kinds of stories and botch the tone. The plot isn’t strong enough to make up for it. So all you’re left with is a neat premise and some nice visuals.

To me, it sits right next to the Keanu Reeves Johnny Mnemonic. It’s got all the Gibsony parts without being smart or cool. Star Trek can get away with being corny and on the nose at times. Cyberpunk just can’t.

  36. gasfjhagskd February 12, 2018 / 7:13 pm

I think it has bad writing and bad acting. I’m a huge sci-fi nerd and I give it a “meh”.

  37. maffew12 February 12, 2018 / 7:13 pm

I barely made it through the first episode… frustratingly dull characters, I didn’t care about what happened to them at all.. it looks awesome, but if you asked me for a summary of the first episode I couldn’t tell you..

  38. Redrumsiruf February 12, 2018 / 7:13 pm

I really tired to like this show, but its not really compelling. The concept is interesting, it just fails in excution I guess. Plus some of the acting is really bad.

  39. lplegacy February 12, 2018 / 7:13 pm

Thing is, this show isn’t even over yet. All of the criticisms this seasons got could be fixed in the next.

  40. deadsuneffigy February 12, 2018 / 7:13 pm

I have it on my list. I can’t wait to start it. Joel Kinnaman
has really grown on me. I loved The Killing but I was always unsure about him. But I have seen everything he has done after the show and I think he is great.

I don’t know much about the show or the book but I am kind of getting a Minority Report/In Time vibe. Found out the other day he went to high school with Noomi Rapace and Alexander Skarsgård.
