This was done with secret ballots, so we don’t know the results by party.

    | Yes| No| Abstentions| Void ballots
    | 364| 315| 9| 4

Note that the Grand Coalition that will make up the government actually holds 399 seats.
The minimum required number of votes was 355.

Recently it seemed like she had lost her grip on power, but things look a lot different now.
She managed to force her party into giving up an unprecedented number of ministries to the SPD (her junior coaliton partner), and now she got the SPD to retract a move to abolish a controversial law that forbids advertising for and informing on abortions.
With the right-wing AfD scaring most people into accepting her grand coalition after all, all she has to do now is not fuck it up (again) and she’ll probably make Xi Jinping envious of the stability of her reign…my grandchildren will probably grow up with her on the throne.

Genuine question? Why did the allies allow the German chancellor(ship) to have no term limit?

Do Germans think that she’s been that good for the country?

As an American reading this thread, how many legitimate political parties are there in Germany that actually stand a chance of winning anything?

Merkel’s gonna be in power longer than Xi jinping at this rate.

I love the reddit’s alt-reich will froth over this. This is delicious – their leaders seek to divide and conquer yet Germany still holding strong despite all their unprecedented venomous spewings. She is a woman of principle, albeit quite conservative one, which many fail to observe. Here’s to another successful chancellorship, Angela!

Merkel is a populist. She moved her conservative party to the left, up to a point where 15% of their former voters voted for a right wing party with no coherence.

She closed the nuclear power plants down after prolonging their life earlier, just because of the hysteria about nuclear power shortly after Fukushima. She knew it was not founded on any belief, or evidence.

She does things against her core knowlege and beliefs, that she shouldn’t. She does not like open confrontation, or standing for her word.

That’s a big problem, because you don’t know what you will get.

She is still just managing the country not going along with innovation, or a grand plan for the future.

Hooray.. Another 4 years of literally nothing happening over here. AfD will be above 20% next year and then we’re fucked.
