Ice on sensors ’caused Russia plane crash’ – Speed sensors that were iced over may have caused a passenger jet to crash near Moscow, killing all 71 people on board, investigators say. The instruments fed the pilots wrong speed data, they added.

Unless the first investigators to the scene discovered the pitot tubes (those ‘L’ shaped things that stick out of the plane somewhere near the front) actually iced over, such musings are nothing but idle speculation.

Speculation driven by the crash of Air France Flight 447 from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to Paris, France, in 2009.

On that flight, all 3 pitot tubes freezing up and becoming clogged with ice was blamed for the crash, but note that those tubes are electrically heated to prevent such occurrence, and the ones used on Flight 447 were from a manufacturer that had experienced several previous instances of the heating element failing – an issue that has since been resolved in the intervening years.

And if the pitot tubes had become clogged, that would have been discovered as the aircraft was racing down the runway, because the pilots would have had no way of knowing that the aircraft had reached ‘rotation’ speed, or the minimum speed necessary for take-off.

Which should have led to an aborted take-off.

You would think about the legendary cold that exists in Russia – ice would be one thing these people have conquered by now…
