This strikes me more as, avatar but as a japanese themed comic book series.

azula’s crew always look SO cool

  3. suddenly_ponies February 14, 2018 / 6:05 pm

More like: if Avatar were only based on Japanese culture instead of various asian/oriental cultures.

  4. darkbreak February 14, 2018 / 6:05 pm

Funnily enough, apparently Japan didn’t really take to Avatar.

    > Kunoichi Ty Lee

    Oh lordy.

The Japanese “names” are cracking me up.

    “Zu-ko” – 図子 – literally: “Map Child”

“An” (Aang) – 安 – typically, when combined with other kanji, it has some relation to peace or safety. By itself, it means “cheap”.

“Ka-ta-ra” – 河多良 – This one works: “Many Good Rivers” (or “rivers many good” in order)

    “Sha-ho” – 沙河 – [A town in China](https://goo.gl/maps/CN8SF7amSkN2). Literally “Sand River”.

“To-fu” – 富武 – Literally “wealthy warrior”. I guess that one works too 😉

EDIT: Correction to 沙河 pronunciation. Thanks to u/marpocky for a riveting discussion conclusively proving that Japanese is definitely not the same language as Chinese. Thanks to u/pikaBeam and u/mushl3t for correcting my terrible kanji research. Thanks to [Wikipedia Japan](https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E6%B2%99%E6%B2%B3%E5%B8%82) for steering me in correct direction on pronunciation.

I get the sense that these drawings were not made by a Japanese person.

  8. baronsaga February 14, 2018 / 6:05 pm

Nah, they would’ve turned toph into a loli

  9. JokeyZockey February 14, 2018 / 6:05 pm

Ty Lee as a Kunoichi … my life is complete!

Also, to stay with the Japanese theme: Weren’t Kyoshi and the Warriors intended to look like/appear as Samurai(-esque)?

  10. Strix182 February 14, 2018 / 6:05 pm

I believe the Fire Nation’s culture and aesthetic is loosley based on medieval Japan with a lot of imperial Chinese elements.

if japan made avatar the story and characters would be more trite and cliche and the beach episode wouldnt be used for charterer development

and the tournament arc in korra would be 3 seasons long not half a season

  12. shehasgotmoxie February 14, 2018 / 6:05 pm

I love the one with Aang and Zuko! The juxtaposition of warrior and monk, with the red (fire nation) and yellow (air nation) is pretty cool.

  13. MyMilkshakeHasHerpes February 14, 2018 / 6:05 pm

if japan made it we would still be on book 1 and there would have been no character development yet.

  14. BreezyOG February 14, 2018 / 6:05 pm

Then I’d be able to add this shit to MyAnimeList

    Feelsbadman

I WANT A SLICE OF LIFE ANIME FROM IROH’S TEA SHOP NOW

  16. Mr_Sacks February 14, 2018 / 6:05 pm

Needs more fanservice for it to be truly Japanese. We need multiple bath house episodes damnit

  17. TrueVCU February 14, 2018 / 6:05 pm

In which the 4 nations just correspond to the 4 home islands

  18. godlesspinko February 14, 2018 / 6:05 pm

Nah, the animation style is too high quality.

  19. whatsiteverwas February 14, 2018 / 6:05 pm

Y’all need to chill. When a Japanese person sees “沙河” they very likely think of a Chinese town and say “sha-hey” (or sha-ka). [The Jisho.org entry](http://jisho.org/search/沙河) romanizes it as “Shahe” which would be pronounced “sha-hey” in Japanese. It’s not my fault if the Japanese pronounce it wrong.

IIRC, Avatar(Nickelodeon Japan) didn’t sit too well with the Japanese audience. The similarity between the Fire Nation and Imperial Japan was too obvious and the Japanese really don’t like to be reminded about that stuff.

  21. dietotaku February 14, 2018 / 6:05 pm

hey look, they made mai interesting.

  22. kolo98 February 14, 2018 / 6:05 pm

it also be 500 episodes longer

  23. SharpEdgeSoda February 14, 2018 / 6:05 pm

Real talk, if Japan made Avatar I wouldn’t like it because I can’t stand typical Japanese animation exposition, pacing, inconsistent animation quality, overuse of hyper expression and disjoint between tone and setting.

Let’s throw in an unhealthy obsession with intentionally annoying idiot savant protagonists, innuendo and sex appeal driven fan service, and a need to serve tropes out of obligation instead of ease.

Avatar is Western Animation doing Anime better than Japan does. Feed me your downvotes.

Also an anime killed my grandma.

    Cowboy Bebop is rad though…

**Edit**: I throw angry comments into the void sometimes just to get it off my chest. I didn’t expect 130+ up votes yet angry comments. Today was a good day.

One-Punch Man is rad too because it makes fun of anime. Continue to make assumptions about how much anime I’ve seen though. I’m sure one of you is right.

  24. springthetrap February 14, 2018 / 6:05 pm

Well if Avatar is western animation in an asian setting, then if Japan made it wouldn’t it be an anime in a western setting?

  25. chris_rossetti February 14, 2018 / 6:05 pm

I gotta admit, aside from Azula having a dick, team Azula is scary sharp.

So sharp that they could puncture the hull of an empire class fire nation battle ship, leaving thousands to drown at sea.
    Because they are so sharp.

  26. KakkaKarrot February 14, 2018 / 6:05 pm

It probably wouldn’t be allowed on a kids network if it was made by the Japanese

  27. roosta_da_ape February 14, 2018 / 6:05 pm

I feel like if avatar was Japanese they cartoon would have been doing the absolute most.

  28. Jing0oo February 14, 2018 / 6:05 pm

Aanf really looks abit girly-like in the first pic😅

  29. Djewbf348thoqab February 14, 2018 / 6:05 pm

I like how it’s not much different considering the original show was trying really damn hard to look like anime.

  30. GimpyGimli February 14, 2018 / 6:05 pm

And during the last season we find out the Fire Lord was Aang’s father all along

  31. ibiskool2 February 14, 2018 / 6:05 pm

I still prefer the original, the samurai getup would have made it just silly
