This logo has been popping up since I joined reddit back in 2008… The consensus overall seems to be that it’s likely a mock brand for which the designer realized her could make what looks like a spartan with their silhouette of a golfer swinging, then came up with the name for the brand.

It’s a cynical take, but it’s what I suspect as well. There’s seemingly no existing gold resort/club with a matching brand out there, but a million and a half articles and threads on different social media sites praising what a great logo it is.

Is it this sub in where this is the top all time post or is it on r/graphicdesign?

This is ridiculously good. Easily the best one of these I have seen.

It is much easier to create an icon and then find an application for it, rather than developing a solution to a defined problem.

It is awesome, no doubt. But all of the adoration it is receiving in this post seems to be ignorant of this fact.

If I wanted to really be a dick, I would go as far as to say that this is not design at all, but rather a piece of art disguised as design.

Design is built around solving problems and creating solutions for specific situations. This was not. This was made in reverse.

This was a brilliant solution that was retroactively imagined to fill a problem.

Still cool, but it is not design.

again ? how many times are we going to repost this ?

  7. vuxanov March 14, 2018 / 9:18 pm

Ok, I’m unsubscribing. You people have no idea what actually good design is about. This fake logo is as old as the internet and I don’t want to spend time in “design” community that doesn’t know why this isn’t a good design.

  8. AlienKatze March 14, 2018 / 9:18 pm

All of frontpage sad about Hawkins death, Meanwhile: DesignPorn is back again with the Spartan Golf Club

  9. cubworth March 14, 2018 / 9:18 pm

That’s just not very good. Colour, typography, form and composition all very naive, impractical and ill thought through.

  10. grape_tectonics March 14, 2018 / 9:18 pm

looks like the dude has a hell of a tumor growing out of his chest

  11. Gone_Gary_T March 14, 2018 / 9:18 pm

Trojan Records will be right upset, I’ll imagine. They’ll Troy to put a stop to this.

  12. hoolahoopmolly March 14, 2018 / 9:18 pm

Personally – even if this is clever mixture of icons – I feel the blend of different styles is creating an unbalanced result.
Great concept that still needs a finalized execution.

never knew golden sub like this existed. thanks r/popular…

  14. sabakeyes01 March 14, 2018 / 9:18 pm

One of those cases where people see something cute and think its genius.

This is not a good logo for one main reason which is that it adds unrealistic or uncharacteristic features to one image in order to create the dual image effect. One is the ‘swoosh’ at bottom left of the golfer and the other is the shirt wrinkles to create the nose. In that position, the shirt wouldn’t have those wrinkles, it would actually be quite taut.

  15. OtterTenet March 14, 2018 / 9:18 pm

I wonder if an actual golfer, enthusiast or professional, will find that swing acceptable as depicted. That body and arm position look unnatural.

I don’t think a cool logo is worth showing poor technique – which is a good illustration of a common design pitfall: wanting to produce something “cool” at the expense of the client interests.

  16. stbrads March 14, 2018 / 9:18 pm

    That logo is bitchin.

  17. SphmrSlmp March 14, 2018 / 9:18 pm

Which came first? The logo, the spartan or the golf club?

  18. tehtris March 14, 2018 / 9:18 pm

I hope dude who made this didnt peak too early and has sold other fire like this to actual companies.

  19. PhatKok March 14, 2018 / 9:18 pm

That logo gives me wood like a true Spartan.

  20. nizzy2k11 March 14, 2018 / 9:18 pm

whoever made this was paid far to little.

  21. carlinthecove March 14, 2018 / 9:18 pm

i actually used this photo as an example in my high school business course a few years back, thought it was really clever

  22. Glucose-6-P March 14, 2018 / 9:18 pm

What kind of name is that for a golf club? Do golf players pretend they’re badasses?

  23. GatorSixCharlie March 14, 2018 / 9:18 pm

Meanwhile, I spend 2 hours trying to make a logo for my site and I just adjusting colors and a font. This logo might as well be magic as far as I am concerned.

  24. mygeorgeiscurious March 14, 2018 / 9:18 pm

This is like coming up with a band name before you know how to play an instrument.

  25. GlungoE March 14, 2018 / 9:18 pm

Reminds me of “getting over it” guy. Damn that game.

  26. chdeal713 March 14, 2018 / 9:18 pm

It looks good but the angle is wrong. Following the path of the club you would look like a psycho swinging that way.

  27. Mommas_always_RIGHT March 14, 2018 / 9:18 pm

This is awesome design but bad golf form…would be interested in what your clients think. Keep up the great work.

  28. UnspecifiedIndex March 14, 2018 / 9:18 pm

The Spartan’s mouth makes the golfer’s silhouette look weird. Crappy design.

  29. thedome1999 March 14, 2018 / 9:18 pm

Is this logo used for a real golf club?

  30. superfly512 March 14, 2018 / 9:18 pm

Took me forever to see the entire image. I was too focused on the persons sillouete. They look like a dumpy bald woman

  31. Crimzonite March 14, 2018 / 9:18 pm

  32. digsafe March 14, 2018 / 9:18 pm

Is it a ghost playing golf?

  33. shelbabyylynn March 14, 2018 / 9:18 pm

This was my high school golf team logo lmao

  34. stereotype_novelty March 14, 2018 / 9:18 pm

Except that “mohawk” of club swing is completely unrelated to how the golfer actually swung.

  35. APurrSun March 14, 2018 / 9:18 pm

It’s good because they really captured the essence of a golfer: fat and bald.

  36. swimtwobird March 14, 2018 / 9:18 pm

Eh no, it’s rank, too busy, and very badly balanced.

  37. graffiksguru March 14, 2018 / 9:18 pm

This fake logo is older than sin. Why do we keep upvoting it?

  38. LetMyForbynGo March 14, 2018 / 9:18 pm

Cool logo. More than sick of numbskull American bros slapping spartan helmets on shit, though.

“Are you ready for some tough, fearless, warrior-culture-style GRASS THWACKING?!”

    ~guitar shredding~

  39. Jumbobie March 14, 2018 / 9:18 pm

I’m not getting a good sense of the direction that the golfer is supposed to be facing, so while I get that it is supposed to be hitting a ball away after a swing I can’t help but feel that the speed lines after the club represent the speed of it coming down when beating something/one.

  40. ibulamatari March 14, 2018 / 9:18 pm

For the 100th time. It’s a concept. Nice idea. That’s all. This is a logo without a real purpose.

  41. potatan March 14, 2018 / 9:18 pm

These should be called visual puns

  42. Mindreactions March 14, 2018 / 9:18 pm

The longer you look, the more you see on this pic. Interesting.

  43. kelloggj March 14, 2018 / 9:18 pm

This just gets better the longer I look at it

  44. MrAchilles March 14, 2018 / 9:18 pm

Whoever came up with that design is a genius.
