Unlike a lot of the films that would come later and be inspired by its production design to use aggressive digital color correction, the Matrix actually predates the use of digital intermediates by a year or so. It was shot on 35mm and finished photochemically, so unlike a lot of 4k rereleases there should be a nice bump in image quality if they rescanned the film in 4k.

The Matrix is the only movie I’ve ever seen in a theater that made the entire audience collectively say “What the fuck?” at the same time.

    It was pretty fucking awesome.

Dolby Atmos remixes on both the standard Blu and the UHD disc! Wooooooo!

Hopefully with the original, theatrical grey tint.

  7. Scazzz March 14, 2018 / 8:30 am

Animatrix in 4k would be nice too…

  8. cficare March 14, 2018 / 8:30 am

Whelp….looks like I gotta buy The Matrix – AGAIN!

I remember a cousin showing me how amazing DVDs were by playing this movie. How times change.

Wonder if this will improve or worsen that scene in matrix 2 where neo is fighting a couple hundred agent smiths.

  13. I_Am_Ironman_AMA March 14, 2018 / 8:30 am

I’ll admit it. I’m psyched to see Trinity in that suit in 4k.

  14. Brandon_2149 March 14, 2018 / 8:30 am

Nice, one of my favorite stand alone films of all time the matrix is getting a 4k release. It makes me wonder what the sequels would have been like. It’s too bad we’ll never know.

    I’m digging the new boxart.

  16. thescott2k March 14, 2018 / 8:30 am

I had a widescreen VHS copy of this movie with some of the extras from the DVD included after the movie. Didn’t have a DVD player, had to make do. Was a good tape.

  17. SettleDownButtercup March 14, 2018 / 8:30 am

I’m sure glad I never invested in DVDs and HD Blu-Rays. I’d have spent a lot of money by now on that.

  18. Travistie March 14, 2018 / 8:30 am

One of my favorite movies! On my birthday!!!!!!!!!!!

  19. Delta_Assault March 14, 2018 / 8:30 am

The Wachowski Bros’ best movie. They haven’t topped it since.

  20. valriia March 14, 2018 / 8:30 am

I first watched The Matrix in cinema. Then it was the first movie I watched on PC – as a full length ASCII movie. Then it was the first movie I watched on PC with very low resolution. Then I’ve watched it in every other format improving its quality over the years. And now I’m going to watch it in sweet truly remastered 4K. I have no doubt some day I’d watch in fully immersive VR.

It’s gonna be all fun and games, until someone pulls my plug and I realize that The Matrix is just real.

  21. Etna_No_Pyroclast March 14, 2018 / 8:30 am

I hope they worked on some of the FX. I re-watched it recently, and omg, some of the shots don’t hold up well in HD.

  22. candytripn March 14, 2018 / 8:30 am

Probably not the best place to ask, but oh well. How is it they can make 4k versions of old movies? Is it because the original is on film, and we were limited in our digital technology at the time, or is there some fancy tech that improves older versions?

  23. marcomc2 March 14, 2018 / 8:30 am

I want my UK VHS back, the cardboard book-opening VHS, the VHS that smelled like Christmas and was grainy and looked like a pre-0/11 world where things were still 90s/near-Y2K and Elite. Fuck

  24. Mikestella March 14, 2018 / 8:30 am

Damn it, I upgraded from DVD to blu-ray for this movie too lol

  25. boomdroopr March 14, 2018 / 8:30 am

i remember seeing this movie when I was like 12 years old. my dad let me rent it at blockbuster and i watched it alone in my room, got scared and turned it off.

  26. InvisibleLeftHand March 14, 2018 / 8:30 am

It’s not what I wanted to read… I wanna know about that Matrix prequels project!

  27. Jason_mb March 14, 2018 / 8:30 am

Great, another version of this movie I’ll have to buy.

  28. fitbabits March 14, 2018 / 8:30 am

Take my money. A week before my birthday, too.

  29. Geek_Charming March 14, 2018 / 8:30 am

I’d be interested to know whether this comes in the original theatrical release color scheme, or the reworked ‘green tint’ one they made for the blu-ray release.

  30. 7homson March 14, 2018 / 8:30 am

Seeing as how The Matrix is my favorite movie of all time, I just set a reminder for May 22nd!

  31. papasmurph March 14, 2018 / 8:30 am

People haven’t even adopted Blu-ray yet. The picture and audio quality of DVD is sucky, but it doesn’t seem people care, even though all newly produced streamed content is at least HD now.

  32. new2DoTA2 March 14, 2018 / 8:30 am

    This can’t be… This is a glitch…

  33. u9Nails March 14, 2018 / 8:30 am

My friends tried to ignore The Matrix. “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Sci-Fi Adventure.” Keanu made me believe he was more than himself. He was becoming a legend.

  34. MatrixRemixed March 14, 2018 / 8:30 am

May be only tangentially related, but I’ve made fan edits of Reloaded and Revolutions. They combine scenes from the theatrical films, The Animatrix animated shorts, and the Enter The Matrix video game.

So fare the edits are only in standard definition, though I’m working on high definition versions. Perhaps soon after I’ll be able to make 4K versions.

  35. Darierl March 14, 2018 / 8:30 am

Now do a HD remake of Path of Neo for the PS4 please.

  36. BlownHappyKid March 14, 2018 / 8:30 am

It’s about time! I already finally have the Blu-ray and was hoping this awesome nostalgia trip could be expanded into another format!

My body is ready to reenter The Matrix! Again!

  37. 04__Revenge__01 March 14, 2018 / 8:30 am

I know Im a bit late to the party but…. I have had this on blu Ray for quite a few years. When I did watch it got the first time in this format I do have to say that the opening scene did not age well and it very much looks like a cheap (even though I know it wasn’t) Hollywood Backlot set. I do want to finally watch it with my SO who has never seen it but yeah it did not look good….

  38. DerrickEspin0 March 14, 2018 / 8:30 am

I read “May 22nd” as “Mind” in the voice of Morpheus.

  39. banana-viking March 14, 2018 / 8:30 am

I’m glad they never made sequels to this one to cash in on it.
