From what I’ve heard, its supposedly very rare for two voice actors to actually record their lines in the same room like Tim Allen and Tom Hanks did there. But for the natural flow of the conversation, especially an argument where the two characters interrupt eachother so much like that, it just seems so totally worth it.

Man, I miss Jim Varney and Don Rickles.

The quality of those microphones is insanely good! how much does one of those cost?

That little girl who played Hannah is 31 now. Time flies.

I knew many of the actors behind the other voices but never knew Annie Potts was Bo Peep and Laurie Metcalf was the mom. And I wish they would have throw in some footage of R Lee Ermey as the Sergeant.

Did not realize that was Ernest playing Slink.

I love how Tim Allen can’t quite handle Tom Hanks’…passion

  8. Lazy_Sans February 12, 2018 / 1:45 pm

Just saw this after “Kingdom Hearts 3” trailer.

Chances are low, but I do hope to hear their voices as Buzz, Woody and the rest of the cast in it.
I mean they did voice their characters for 2 TV specials, so it’s not impossible.

According to the audio commentary, the staff felt so lucky to get Hanks right before Philadelphia gave Hank’s career another big push, and right before Home Improvement took off Allen’s film career.

How the heck did I not know/realize Rex is Wallace Shawn.

I wonder if it would be correct to assume that these voice recordings took place before the cgi was rendered, and they voiced these characters without knowing exactly how they would look and move in the film.

If Tim Allen knew how Buzz Lightyear also stood up straight with his chest puffed out and talking like an authoritative figure, you would imagine he would also mimic that as he reads the lines. Tom Hanks lanky arm flailing seems to be similar to how they have Woody move.

Nearly posted on the anniversary of Varney’s death. Had no idea he passed away 18 years ago.

You can see the passion and care in John Lasseter as he helps the actors

you can tell Tim Allen didn’t get arrested for having 650 grams of ideas

there’s something fascinating about watching voice actors work. you can hear how animated they are in their voices which it makes it so easy to visualise their characters as they talk – really impressive stuff

Brought back a lot of good memories for me OP. Don Rickles is the man.

Regarding that particular back-and-forth scene between Allen and Hanks, it’s really interesting to compare that more straightforward version of the reading to the more animated (for lack of a better term) version that ultimately ended up in the film. The pacing, tones, and beats of the conversation are completely different. It’s fun to imagine the process and various tweaks on the performances that led them to arrive at what ultimately ended up being the final takes.

Tim Allen looks a lot older than he really is. He’s only 3 years older than Hanks. Maybe Tom Hanks looked younger than the average.

  19. YaBoyStevieJay February 12, 2018 / 1:45 pm

The Toy Story movies are basically just Tom Hanks screaming into a microphone

  20. Threearmpeople February 12, 2018 / 1:45 pm

For many years I thought that Buzz Lightyear is voiced by George Clooney. Few years ago when I learned the truth I was surprised. My whole life was a lie.. Built by myself..

Seeing Jim Varney got me right in the feels. Most people don’t realize what an incredible genius he was, and although most of what people have seen are the the Ernest movies — which, when watched with true appreciation and understanding for the skill he brought to the screen — really just didn’t do the depth and breadth of his talent justice. He was exceptionally gifted as an actor and taken from us far too soon.

Sometimes someone says something that leads me to believe that they might be a robot without a soul. Forget that blade runner shit. I ask them one question.

    “Do you enjoy Toy Story?”

  23. iamwatching4 February 12, 2018 / 1:45 pm

They originally chose Jim Carry to voice Woody but he charged them too much

  24. Mattt9998 February 12, 2018 / 1:45 pm

I am soooo gonna blow my 3 year olds mind later today.

  25. nms1539 February 12, 2018 / 1:45 pm

Wallace Shawn’s take of the “rejection” line was the one used in the movie. They just cut out “I’ll get replaced!”

  26. Robobvious February 12, 2018 / 1:45 pm

Oh my God, how did I never realize Wallace Shawn played Rex? O.o

  27. Dragons_Malk February 12, 2018 / 1:45 pm

Laurie Metcalf was the mom? Oh no. Here come the tears again…

(I just watched Lady Bird; I apologise.)

  28. marvelknight28 February 12, 2018 / 1:45 pm

Nice timing but watching this makes me wonder if anyone will reprise their role in KH3. At least it’s practically guaranteed with the Tangled, BH6 and Hercules casts, less so with the Pixar ones.

  29. _Mardoxx February 12, 2018 / 1:45 pm

Can someone amplify this and reupload it?

  30. KyleRM February 12, 2018 / 1:45 pm

I’m really curious how they’ll handle potato Head in the fourth movie. Maybe they have enough unused lines from the trilogy to piece together what they need, like doc Hudson in cars 3. Or maybe recast him with someone like Jerry stiller?

  31. mimitchi33 February 12, 2018 / 1:45 pm

This is pretty neat! Toy Story was one of my favorite movies as a kid and it was interesting to see how the voices were done.

  32. uncletravellingmatt February 12, 2018 / 1:45 pm

I fucking love this. I love have much the actors have to give, the way they just spit out this whole series of options for the director (and dialog editor) to pick from.

  33. I_Am_Dynamite6317 February 12, 2018 / 1:45 pm

That is not at all how I would have guessed Jim Varney dressed.

  34. myhihi1 February 12, 2018 / 1:45 pm

Tom Hanks’ body language as he yells at Tim Allen is awesome. Tim Allen just seizes up. haha

  35. Myxin February 12, 2018 / 1:45 pm

So Sheldon’s mom and grandma do voices in toy story never made the connection before

  36. badhed February 12, 2018 / 1:45 pm

    Tim Allen is a snitch.

  37. river2180 February 12, 2018 / 1:45 pm

I was hoping to see Tom Hanks say “You. Are. A. Toy!” That’s one of my favorite lines.
