Those are good choices. They are definitely the front runners for the screenplay Oscars now.

I hope they both win at the Oscars as well. CMBYM is pretty much a lock for Adapted. However, Original is still up in the air considering 3B, which seriously may have been able to beat Get Out here, wasn’t eligible for the WGA Awards, and the Best Picture winner (definitely between Shape of Water and 3B) tends to win its screenplay category.

Does this significantly change anything as far as the Best Picture race goes?

Back in 2016, Spotlight won Best Picture with just an Original Screenplay win. Get Out winning is not out of possibility!

It will be interesting to see what happens now with the Oscar race with the influence of these awards. The race between The Shape of Water (which practically has in the bag Best Director, and some technical awards) and Three Billboards (that has the safer choices for Best Leading Actress and Best Supporting Actor) now has a dark horse and its name is Get Out, which could pull out a Moonlight; after all, Universal is spending serious money in the “For Your Consideration” campaign, while Fox Searchlight has to divide its prospects between caring for TSOW and 3 Billboards. While The Shape of Water’s screenplay was never going to win tonight, 3 Billboards couldn’t win because it wasn’t nominated (Martin McDonagh is not a member of the WGA), so the Original Screenplay category was between Get Out and Lady Bird (and I think that Greta Gerwig’s film will also go home empty handed next month). My guess is that if Jordan Peele wins the Oscar for Original Screenplay, Shape of Water wins Best Picture. If McDonagh wins it, 3 Billboards will definitely win Best Picture. But again, Peele could surprise me and Get Out could be the first scary movie since The Silence of the Lambs to win Best Picture.

Oh, and about Call Me By Your Name: I can bet safely that Adapted Screenplay is a lock and the only Oscar that will go towards Luca Guadagnino’s great movie. Gary Oldman blocked Timothee Chalamet in every meaningful award ceremony, the supporting actors were snubbed, and Coco will (deservedly) win Best Original Song. Also, the Academy members will probably say “what, we gave the Oscar to that gay movie last year”, so they feel safe.

I’m honestly surprised Get Out beat The Shape of Water and Lady Bird. Holy shit. Hard to tell if it can beat Three Billboards for the Academy Award though. I hope it does.

How in the hell does Get Out beat Three Billboards AND Lady Bird for original screenplay? And for that matter, how in the hell did Jordan Peele get an Oscar nomination for Best Director and not Martin McDonagh?

Get Out is a good movie. I liked it. B+. But the massive amount of prestige awards praise seems odd to me.

The wga? I want aware the world Canadian bureau dealt with movies.

I really love all of Oscar movies. But I don’t get why CMBYN is That good. You know? I get it, it was good, I even give 8/10 to it. But I don’t see why it being praised like it’s some kind of best movie they have ever seen in their life.

  10. benishben February 12, 2018 / 8:48 pm

Get Out got a good script, but c’mon, best screenplay?

  11. austinbond132 February 12, 2018 / 8:48 pm

CMBYM will almost certainly win Best Adapted, but Lady Bird could take Best Original (and sweep Director/Picture too)

  12. scoutfincher February 12, 2018 / 8:48 pm

Very deserved wins, I say. Get Out’s screenplay was a smart, sharp look at racial issues and Call Me by Your Name’s screenplay had a beautiful, nuanced look at first love.

Im SO excited for the Oscars this year, I have no idea how it’ll go

People love to talk about how overrated GET OUT is

But, can we talk about how overrated Call Me By Your Name is?

Yeah, it’s decent visual storytelling with some really good performances by Michael Stuhlberg and Timothy Chalamet

[This film drags so much. It’s 2 hours and 15 something minutes yet it felt like forever. The lack of conflict is what makes this movie a real drag. There’s absolutely no conflict present. Nothing dramatic really happens except at the very end. On top of that, the film appears confused and messy. They spend so much time developing the main two characters yet you never get a real sense of their characters and you don’t get to know them like you should. I couldn’t buy their relationship. I have nothing against LGBT films. I loved Moonlight and Blue is the Warmest Colour. BITWC is 3 hours something long but I didn’t feel it’s length. At it’s very core, CMBYN wasn’t compelling to me because there wasn’t a slightest bit of conflict and drama to keep me invested throughout except at the very end where Elio learned that Oliver has to leave now and then later when he finds out Oliver is getting married. I also didn’t feel that the chemistry between the two main characters was good. The relationship felt kind of forced. I’m not saying it’s a terrible film but it’s far from perfect or even “GREAT” in my personal opinion. If you disagree, that’s fine but this is how I feel](#spoiler)

EDIT: Holy shit, are you serious? -5 points for CLEARLY EXPLAINING WHY I DID NOT LIKE THE FILM? I didn’t even say I hate it. I just said I found it overrated. I did not say it’s terrible. I wrote valid points for not liking the film but people downvoted me? I didn’t even say “bohoo if you disagree, you’re wrong”, I said it’s my personal opinion.

There’s a similar comment in here where someone is saying “GET OUT is overrated” and it has 12 upvotes. No explanation for why they think it’s overrated. No details. Nothing. Yet it has 12 upvotes.

ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS? And I say CMBYN is overrated and I give valid reasons, only to receive 5 downvotes in return?

This comment section seems like a fucking circlejerk for Call Me By Your Name. Not to generalize, I’m only talking about those who downvoted me, yet upvoted this comment of get out being overrated. If you think get out is overrated, fine, but don’t fucking downvote me for saying Call Me By your Name is overrated and actually describing why I think so.

Fuck whoever downvoted me. FUCK YOU.

This puts get out and 3 billboards at even chances for the oscar. Billboards has a lot of love from the actors that could very well see it through. I think both are absolutely deserving and 3 billboards was my favourite film from last year but a huge part of me wants Jordan peeled to win an oscar. Unlikely hypothetical situation could be get out, 3 billboards and lady bird splitting the vote and the big sick wins.

If Laurie metcalf wins the bafta I think she has a slight chance at the oscar. It could be seen as the only place to award lady bird so I don’t think she’s completely out yet.

The WGA should stand for the White Guilt Awards. Instead of Oscars they can hand out Whilties.

You don’t give people awards for being black or gay or female and call that progressive. That’s retarded. You give them awards because they make something award worthy. Anything else is tokenism and pandering.

  17. lexburg February 12, 2018 / 8:48 pm

Take a step back and read the comments. Referencing won awards as a precursor for future awards. Speculation on certain awards having an effect on other awards. Who has won what determine who will win what. We are not plotting the Presidential race with districts and electoral votes. BO #’s, race/sex/sexual preference of the filmmakers shouldn’t be a factor. The best material should win. Get Out or Lady Bird up against Dunkirk or TSOW for Best Picture should be laughable.

  18. XavierSmart February 12, 2018 / 8:48 pm

Three Billboards is not winning without a directing nomination, and the movie is really not an Argo situation in the slightest.
