I usually recommend Rush. A lot of their songs are really good.

It’s weird, either you’ve never heard of them, or you love them. I’ve never seen anything in between.

I usually like to recommend lesser known bands to people, just because they’re less likely to have heard of them. I have a bunch based on what genre a person likes the most:

[Car Seat Headrest – Drunk Drivers/Killer Whales](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccztRby3FAk) (indie rock) – Very emotional, lo-fi indie rock, with really unusual song structuring, fun riffs, quirky lyrics, teenage self deprecation, and endless quotable lines and metaphors.

[The Smith Street Band – Ducks Fly Together](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YD8mp5G0ja8) (pop punk/folk punk) – Australian punk band with really emotional lyrics, and awesome guitar harmonies. If you can make it past the lead singers incredibly thick Australian accent, you’re sure to enjoy it.

[Algiers – The Underside of Power](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGZXzmM1smM) (gospel/soul/post-punk) – A fusion of genres you don’t know you need until you hear it. They have a very in-your-face, far-left political view point, but they express it well with the trap-inspired beats and well-thought out a punchy lyrics. The singer, Franklin Fisher has a vocal range so intense and over the top that he sometimes sounds like he’s possessed, especially on the track “Walk Like A Panther” from their latest LP.

[Angel Olsen – Shut Up, Kiss Me](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nleRCBhLr3k) (indie pop/singer songwriter) – Very laid back, very funny, and sometimes very sad. Great vocal performances and production on all her tracks.

[Beach Slang – Bad Art & Weirdo Ideas](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxRolJBv3oQ) (shoegaze/punk rock) – Some fun, loud, shoegazey punk rock, complete with emotional lyrics, a “young, dumb, drunk, hazy” attitude, and absolutely insane live shows.

[Benjamin Clementine – Phantom of Aleppoville](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3m5PuSmOZYo) (avant garde) – A man with a beautiful voice who strings together ballads of all genres. His lyrics are so interesting and well-thought out that he won a Mercury Prize for his efforts.

[Camp Cope – Lost (Season One](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ehcknhatX4) (indie rock) – All female indie rock back hailing from Australia. Due to there only being 3 members, the bassist essentially acts a lead guitar, and the guitar takes the role of the bass, keeping the rhythm. Emotional lyrics ahoy.

[Quelle Chris – Buddies](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yq_Cc3hZqEM%5D (jazz rap) – Really well produced rap tracks with hilarious gang vocals and topics. Definitely recommend if you’re sick of the current trend of all rappers sounding the same as each other.

[DZ Deathrays – Blood on My Leather](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhKwIUvg1PY) (dance punk) – crunchy and fuzz filled riffs from a two-piece band, their sound is massive, and the choruses are mosh worthy.

[Code Orange – Forever](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZ9JVxQVQy4) (metalcore) – Kurt Ballou (of Converge) brings his famous crushing mixing and production powers to the table. Catchy song writing, and a heavy industrial influence helps push the metalcore genre forward, rather than sticking to the bare minimum, which so many bands do nowadays.

[Mitski – Your Best American Girl](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_hDHm9MD0I) (lo-fi indie rock) – Sad indie rock from the perspective of a young Asian girl who grew up feeling despondent and unloved due to her appearance. She’s been endorsed by John Mayer and others.

[NAILS – You Will Never Been One Of Us](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hGGGh03jN4w) (powerviolence) – you know how sometimes you listen to that one heavy metal song for 10 minutes just to get to that one hard-ass riff that lasts 60 seconds? That’s all NAILS is, they write only those hard-ass riffs and cut the bullshit. They have 60-90 second songs that are intense, loud, angry, and unforgiving aggressive. Kurt Ballou again proves that he’s the best metal producer on the planet.

[Parquet Courts – Wide Awake](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZXS8Jpkiac) (new-wave/post punk revival) – Really quirky song topics, funky and sporadic guitar riffs. They have songs from many different genres, you’re bound to find something you like.

[Heart Beach – Brittle](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9vag_ravpk) (dream pop) – smooth basslines, blisteringly loud guitar harmonies, punchy drum track beats. Sad and happy at the same time. Definitely recommend if you love Beach House and other dream pop bands.

  5. XeliusOne March 14, 2018 / 6:18 pm

Cage The Elephant. Not for everyone but I think everyone has heard their “Ain’t no Rest for the Wicked”. But I think they just get better and better as time goes on.

  6. BeardedBassist21 March 14, 2018 / 6:18 pm

Queens of the Stone Age. They’ve got great variety to their sound, they’re unique, and they’re more accessible than other bands I like such as Nine Inch Nails and Tool.

With youtube links to one of my favorite tracks by the artist:

    [The National](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wg5geyUlU4Y)

    [Vince Staples](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHPT7ueuupE)

    [Danny Brown](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7L4JnAuW00k)

[Deathspell Omega](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5M78jWUuJ4) (forewarning, this one is really heavy)

[Godspeed You! Black Emperor](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2c9TyeKnGGk) (this is the full 28 minute EP, but is one of my all time favorite pieces of music and should really be heard in full)

[Full of Hell](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a6-1ducSK-4) (Another heavy warning, also this is the full album but it’s only 23ish minutes long, as is typical with powerviolence.)

This is a pretty good look into my taste and has quite a bit of variation.

The 1975, they’re groovy as heck

  27. QuagStack March 14, 2018 / 6:18 pm

If they are okay with screaming vocals with a bunch of different genre influences, I suggest Dance Gavin Dance.

  31. AntiSalty March 14, 2018 / 6:18 pm

Highly suspect. They got a ton of different songs that fit many different genres.

Lydia is wildly different from Chicago.

And serotonia is way different than something like little one.

  32. wyldklitoris March 14, 2018 / 6:18 pm

Red Hot Chili Peppers. Hands down. I could listen to them on repeat for the rest of my life.

    The World Inferno/Friendship Society

    Weird anarchist/gypsy/orchestral/punk/bar mitzvah music

  39. DenL4242 March 14, 2018 / 6:18 pm

Fountains of Wayne. They are quirky enough to appeal to those who don’t like mainstream music, accessible to those who do. And everyone likes “Stacy’s Mom” so it’s a good entry point.

  40. Ombra17 March 14, 2018 / 6:18 pm

I’m not one to recommend music to people. But here’s the bands I enjoy (mostly Alt. Rock):
Mumford & Sons (haters gon hate)
Bastille (I can listen to Bastille for hours on end without ever getting tired of it)
    Of Monsters and Men
    Alabama Shakes
Nathaniel Rateliff & the Nightsweats (more of a Roots-type band)
    Leon Bridges (roots/soul type)
    The 1975
Courtney Barnett (if you like weird, talk-singing)

    EDIT: Fixed a name

  43. pwincesspup March 14, 2018 / 6:18 pm

Been recommending Alvvays to a bunch of people lately. Their latest album Antisocialites is perhaps the most pleasant indie/dream pop I’ve heard in a long time. [Plimsoll Punks is a great place to start](https://youtu.be/VXZx19uN4MQ)

  44. gradualfailure March 14, 2018 / 6:18 pm

I love instrumental music, especially with good guitar work. It helps me stay focused when working or when playing a game or anything, really. My go to to suggest right now would be Chon. Such a cool, beachy kjnda vibe, with lots of bits of jazz thrown in. Everyone should give them a listen!

  45. TheJumbaman March 14, 2018 / 6:18 pm

Not counting top bands, Hippo Campus, Foster The People, Glass Animals

  46. voidnextdoor March 14, 2018 / 6:18 pm

A hoe for Hozier. The guy is so fucking good and poetic

  47. highdingo March 14, 2018 / 6:18 pm

Die Antwoord. You need to listen to them a few times though. They are one of those bands that grows on you.

  48. Cereal_Monogamist March 14, 2018 / 6:18 pm

Stereolab’s Dots and Loops album. It’s by far one of the most creative and interesting albums of all time IMO.

More recently, I’ve been trying to get people into Palm’s Rock Island album that just came out. It’s weird as hell, but I love it.

In a similar vein, Candy Claws’ Ceres & Calypso in the Deep Time album is terrific if you like dreamy weird stuff.

And I always have to throw in a shout out to Deerhoof. Breakup Song is a classic album. But any/all of their stuff is catchy as fuck, and super creative.

    Ok bye.

  49. Duchebagel March 14, 2018 / 6:18 pm

Seriously, please check out Ashes Divide. They only have one album, and it was a side project by the guitarist of A Perfect Circle, Billy Howerdel. It is great.

  50. Gwensaur March 14, 2018 / 6:18 pm

Civil twilight. Amazing band from South Africa
