At the NYC DMV, they have a new check-in touch screen for your arrival. Its a clearly marked self check in touch screen but I got yelled at for trying to check myself in. Apparently, it is someone’s job to stand there and use the self check-in screen for you.

I write user manuals. Open your car manual sometime and see what the manufacturer feels they must tell people.

The people that write the handbooks for the military.

I mean srsly, I don’t know how the US one is. But the German one has shit like “When climbing a tree the soldier has to stop with the climbing motions upon reaching the top of said tree” Or “The Soldier has to independently begin with swimming motions at a water depth of 1.20 meters. The mandatory salutation is eliminated for that duration”.

I mean wtf? Also, here are some more.

“If the head is seperated more than 20 centimeters from the rest of the body, death is to be determined”

“Hills and mountains are differentiated mainly by their height”

“With the beginning of the night, an increase of darkness is to be estimated”

“With snow and ice, occurring coldness is to be estimated”

This one is from the uniform rules: “At night temperatures of over 27°C in the sleeping quarters, the sleeves of the pajama has to be rolled up 4 times”

This stuff was reworked at the beginning of 2000 but it was real rules until then.

    Engineering “idiot proof” department.

I’ll have to ask them what the department is actually called but essentially they make sure we can’t be sued by someone tampering with a product. They recently sent back a plug in air freshener because you could fit a small screwdriver into it and shock yourself.

In most cases there isn’t much you can get out of a first tier end user support helpdesk person that you couldn’t find on your own with 1 minute of googling.

Honestly it’s sad to say this, but children’s social work.

I’ve been in this line of work for a while and an overwhelming amount of referrals I encounter are due to parents who do not take responsibility for anything. I mean ANYTHING. I’ve had parents who tried to physically fight law enforcement when we asked parents if they disciplined their children. I’ve had newborns test positive for all kinds of drugs because their mothers wanted to get high right before labor. I’ve had parents yell in our faces about how we’re a waste of time and then continue to brag about the welfare they’re receiving because WE worked on the documents to enable them to get the funds.

At the end of the day, there are more people than you think in the world who shouldn’t have kids. And as a social worker, it breaks my heart seeing the true victims of the neglect being the helpless children. But because there will forever be parents without a sense of judgment, social workers will continue to be a high demand job.

For the college students out there looking to work in this field. Just be prepared. It’s not easy work. It’s a never ending battle between a person’s determination to help the world and the seemingly hopeless direction humanity is heading towards. You WILL see trauma first hand. Your biases WILL get the best of you sometimes. And that’s okay! Because at the end of the day, these kids deserve a chance.

Police. As a former cop, 90 percent of that job is babysitting trashy people and sorting out their drama.

You do just enough good deeds to make the job worth it.

You spend hours on end writing it all down.

Those people that make warning signs for food products, like “may contain eggs.” FFS if the fucking carton of eggs doesn’t contain eggs, I’d be concerned.

As a lawyer, I think 70 percent of my time is spent dealing with the stupid things people do. The other 30 is probably spent trying to figure out how to make the other lawyer look stupid.
